Grossarl, a small beautiful town situated about 70 kilometers from Salzburg, surrounded by mountain peaks of Austria’s biggest National Park High Tauern (original name Hohe Tauern). Have you heard of it? We hadn’t until last summer.
We had four days off work and free summer days shouldn’t be wasted. We already knew that Austria has a lot of beautiful locations to offer. We also wanted to travel on budget, so we just went to Booking and chose the apartment house which was in our cost range. (We always prefer those that has rating 8 or higher).
Nemventure! We didn’t really know where exactly we were going so we hand’t planned anything ready. In result we liked the place and host so much that we decide to go back there in the same autumn.
Important! We drove a rented car. There are public transport going as well, but not sure how regularly. Plus when you stay basically in the middle of nowhere in Alps, it is much easier to plan your sightseeing when to have your own wheels under your asses.
Where you can actually drive? Here’s a small list of locations within the region:
The cave Eisriesenwelt, it’s the largest ice cave in the world. You can get there with a cable car or economy 14 euro and hike to the top, but it not easy nor short path to go up. Even with taking the cable car there will be roughly 30 minutes of walking to get up to the cave. And in cave you will have another surprise of 700 steps up and the same amount down :). Steps were not very steep so in the cold cave this works as a nice warm up. Inside the cave you go with a guiding group. In case “Sie verstehe nicht Deutsch”, the wait for the group might take slightly longer.
Gollinger waterfalls. When we visited this beautiful place the weather wasn’t on our side again. Of course when you’re planning to visit waterfalls the rain doesn’t really add any discomfortness as the location will soak you up anyways. So better bring a raincoat or at least some change on clothes with you :).
Hohenwerfen Castle. This place hosts medieval style falcon shows. The show included various different species of falcons and other hunting birds. Walking distance up was shorter than advertised so we recommend to go for it
All of these places are situated in the same direction, so you can easily combine them together.
Kitzlochklamm in Taxenbach. The picturesque gorge with lot of small beautiful waterfalls and rapids.
Drive to Jägersee and hike to Tappenkarsee. (Read more on the link )
If you would like to relax a little spoil yourself in famous Austrian Thermal Spas, there are some located in the area.
Alpen Therme located in Bad Gastein. For us It was a brilliant decision. It turned one of our rainy days into a relaxing one. In additional to pools and saunas there you get to also drink various types of mineral water. But in our opinion there were too few water massagers for amount of customers.
As a relaxing after hiking days, we also visited Tauern Spa. This nice modern Spa located in Kaprun. Has a lot of saunas and pools both in and outdoors.
In Austria, in the sauna area you should be nude. But In Tauern Spa there was a bathing suit department as well.
In the region there are also a lot of beautiful hiking paths with different levels of difficulty. From your local infos you can find maps which shows the trails and makes choosing where to go easier. We decided to go to Frauenkogel and it was nice Nemventure. On the first day of Autumn the winter came to Austria, so we also had a chance to hike in snowy peaks. We also tasted the best coffee we’ve ever had in small Bachalm cafe on the way up.
